Is a mattress crib pad a must, even though the mattress is waterproof?

I have the water/spill proof mattress cover on all our mattresses and it is a life saver. My son has a waterproof baby mattress, but with the cover on it it made cleaning watery explosion diarrhea easier, as well as vomit and urine. I didn't have to scrub and sanitize the mattress because the cover contained everything.

We have a waterproof crib mattress with a waterproof mattress cover, a sheet, another cover, and another sheet over that so if any accidents happen in the middle of the night we just take off one layer and put her down to sleep then deal with the cover and sheets.

I'm only pregnant with my first, but I'm definitely getting a mattress pad even if the mattress is waterproof. There's lot of cheap ones out there that work perfectly, and it just seems so much easier to clean up messes
