when to feed a baby

do you feed a newborn every three hours on the dot or three hours after they finished eating?

****i know people say feed on demand(as per the GI specialist, it has to be every 3hrs) but due to some issues and according to the results of the gastric emptying scan and barium swallow, we don't have the luxury to feed on demand, or breast feed. My baby is on Neocate cuz she's allergic to my milk. With strict diet change and everything, poop test and blood test and I forgot what kind of protein the breast milk has that she cannot take it. Got curious that's why I'm asking****

I try to on the dot, but if it's like 30 min before or something and he's hungry I'll feed him then.

It's from start to start, but a newborn should be fed when hungry. My youngest had severe silent reflux and weight issues (failure to thrive, technically). He could only tolerate small amounts at one time, so ate more often to compensate. He was on Neocate (and reflux meds) due to allergy issues as well.

Two things. 1) Ask your Dr about getting your baby tested for a condition called MSUD (Maple Syrup Urinary Disease (yes it's a real thing)) it's a condition that prevents you from having any protein what so ever, especially breast milk. My husband was born with MSUD its very very rare but there's a blood test you can get done.
And 2) You shouldn't let a newborn go more than every 3 hour, so just fallow baby's hungry signs and go from there. But it's 2-3 hours from when they first start eating so if baby starts eating at 2:15 next feeding would be 4:15 for every 2 hours or 5:15 for every 3.

Dr, nurses & lactation specialist said feed when hungry (do not do a schedule for feeding) especially when breastfeeding for newborns.
