Just can't make it work...
my LO is two weeks old and I've tried to bfeed but I just can't seem to get a latch. he's my first baby.
I did great my first day and then the second day the little dude decided he wasn't getting enough and couldn't calm down enough to take the breast. the nurse in the hospital gave him a pacifier and also suggested that I supplement with formula.
so I did. and he got used to the immediate gratification of the formula. couldn't get a solid latch from then on. I had some support from a consultant in the hospital who spoon fed him colostrum. I couldn't seem to get the hand expressing down so she had to do it for me. then he latched on for all of 5 mins.
came home and started pumping.. got a partial supply going and am supplementing with formula still, but I keep getting mom shamed that I gave up too quickly, I should have given it more time.
I really want to keep trying but I have no more ideas left. my nipples seem to be staying flat when I'm trying to get him to latch. he gets so overwhelmed because he wants the milk so quickly that he starts screaming. then I give him the bottle because he's really hungry.
I tried nipple shields and got him to latch on once but then the second time I tried he was too frustrated so I ended up giving him the bottle.
is it too late at this point? is he just going to be a bottle baby? any other suggestions?
