Apple Pay???

Lol I have no idea where to post this! & google was no help to me at all. I put my credit card on the wallet in my phone, so that I could use Apple Pay. The gas station near my house upgraded all the pumps and it has verifone, which I for some reason thought worked with Apple Pay. But when I went to use it, my phone said to hold near reader to pay. So I did that and it didn't do anything. The card works and says ready to use so I don't think it's an issue with the card. Does anyone understand how to use Apple Pay?!
