This topic has always interested me because my mother chose to spell my somewhat common name in an unusual way. I have had serious issues related to my name (harassment by officers, mortgage being delayed bc wrong spelling was used), as well as just general annoyances with mispronunciation, etc.

I personally wouldn't say it's "selfish" but I do wish people (including my mom lol) would consider how the child will feel about it in the future. I'm a big advocate of just making the child's life easier 🤷‍♀️
