What are Prenatal vitamins for ?

Went to visit a doctor today telling him I want to conceive. He asked me to start prenatal vitamins. But my friend on the other hand says prenatal vitamins are for those who's already conceived. I'm confused !

Pre-natal, meaning before. You should start taking them before and throughout your pregnancy. Folic acid which prevents things like spina bifida and is developed before you have missed your period. Prenatals should be stockpiled in your body before you conceive to you are able to provide your baby the essential vitamins for healthy growth.

Often its benefical to start them early ie before conception to give yourself the best chance of a healthy baby. We need folate or folic acid in our system long before we know we are pregnant to prevent neural tube defects. And most people's diets are not well balanced so coukd be lacking in essential viatmins and minerals. 
I started them a year before ttc. Just wanted all my ducks in a row.

i take prenatals because im ttc as well. prenatal vitamins help prep your body nutrition wise for a healthy pregnancy esp in the early stage. prenatals wont really help you concieve but it'll help make sure your body is ready for conception
