Does a person's suffering give them a right to be an asshole?

Let's say someone is suffering with an illness or losing a child, does that person have carte Blanche to be an asshole to others? If so, to what degree?

I can understand someone who is going through a tough time having a shorter temper, but abuse or assault of any sort is not excusable.

I suffer from a variety of mental illnesses. Yes they may assist in me being upset and losing it. But it is ALWAYS my choice to be an asshole.
Just because I've been raped, doesn't mean I get to be an asshole on a post about rape. Just because I've suffered from anorexia. Doesn't mean I get to be an asshole on a post about eating disorders. Just because I've had a miscarriage, does NOT mean I get to be an asshole on miscarriage posts.
Your problems and issues don't excuse you to act like an ass.

erm no its never ok. Although I am currently the arse hole struggling with grief and spend most of the time angry. it's easy to judge but until you are in a situation the Same, nobody knows how they'd react.

If someone loses a child, they absolutely get a grieving period where I can look past hurtful comments if they are made. How long would depend on my relationship with the person, whether they were seeking help, and if they apologized and recognized their behavior.

My parents were very abusive when we were kids. I'm turning 35 next month. I went to counseling for a while in my 20's, learn to cope, grew up, married, had 3 kids and live a wonderful life. My brother is 2 years younger than me and still blames my mom for everything that goes wrong in his life. That's bullshit. We all moved out by the time we were 18, I was 17. The time to place blame has long passed. Grow up and start taking responsibility for your actions. If you can't, get help.

Tragedies in general are not an excuse for bad behavior, certainly not long term. We've all experienced some measure of loss and tragedy in this life. How we handle it determines strength of character and can change us to our core. How we handle the difficulties in life is far more important than how we handle the good times.

No but when they do act like an asshole the rest of us would be wise to remember what they are going through and have a bit of patience.

Nope. My aunt lost her son a few years ago and was never an asshole. I have Bipolar 1 with chronic depression and a generalized anxiety disorder and while I am an asshole for no reason sometimes, I do apologize without making excuses like "I'm sorry but I have a mental illness 🤷🏻"

My husband is currently going through very intensive chemotherapy for testicular cancer. It has taken such a toll on him physically and mentally- he is so angry all the time. He's frustrated, irritable, suffering from constant side effects... and he is down right mean most of the time. He doesn't even realize it at the time and later he feels terrible. His behavior through all of this is excusable to me because I love him and he is going through something that I can't even begin to understand.
