gagging at the boob?

As of yesterday the initial latches my son has been gagging and nothing comes out but eventually goes on to feed. What can be the reason? I've been having sharp pains in my breast as of Wednesday.. sometime it's a let down others not..

your nipple may be too long for baby's mouth. my daughter does this sometimes I just pull her off and keep helping her latch until she is comfortable. there are also ways you can hold your breast to get a more shallow latch. but if I were u I would ask a lactation consultant or a family member who has BF to see their opinion. whatever the case good luck!

Your milk could be coming out too fast. My daughter did that for a while and it was because the milk was shooting into her mouth and hitting the back of her throat. Hand expressing a little before nursing helped.
