1st airplane ride?

Question

Anyone take their LO on an airplane yet? We are seeing family next month and our LO will be 5 1/2 months and we are dreading the 8 hour plane ride! Anyone have any tips? Unfortunately a red eye wasn't available so we leave at 6 am so will be traveling most of the day :(

We just flew from Seattle to South Carolina, the way there was an overnight flight, coming back was during the day, neither was a direct flight. We brought her carseat & we paid for her to have her own seat, it was more comfortable & safer then having her on my lap, I breast feed, pump & feed her formula so on the plane she was fed from bottles, on the way there she had a pumped bottle that I pumped using my little medela manual pump in the airport bathroom right before we boarded, she drank that while we took off & then slept for around 4.5 hours of the 5 hour flight, then I fed her 2 of the Similac ready to feed 2 oz. bottles, I think they come in a pack of 8 w/ their own nipple & ring, I used arm & hammer pacifier wipes to clean the nipple & ring between feedings, she fussed a little during the 2nd shorter flight but it was still bearable, on the way back she didn't sleep as much, & she had 2 huge blowout diapers, my advice is to have everything u need for changing & cleaning up in a large ziplock bag in your diaper bag & then just bring the smaller bag into the bathroom, it was a hassle digging around for everything while also dealing w/ a squirmy poo covered baby! For most of the flights our seats were in the back close to the bathroom but not for that flight unfortunately :( Also make sure your carry on has a change of clothes 4 u too, my hubby spilled a bunch of formula on his pants & he did not smell great by the time we got home :( For getting around the airport we had her in her front carrier, our stroller was too big to check @ the gate so we checked it w/ our bigger checked luggage before going thru security, @ one of the airports my husband tried to carry her in her car seat but that was awkward & heavy so I had her in the carrier for the rest of the time. Just 4 comparison sake my baby turned 5 months old the day after we got back from the trip, & size wise she's in the 97th percentile for height & 71st for weight. We took our LO on 2 trips so far (3 and 4 months). Each trip the longest flight was about 3hrs and we had her as a lap infant. With how squirmy she is now at 5.5 months I'd highly recommend buying yours their own seat if you can, especially for such a long flight. Also some airplanes have no diaper changing station whatsoever so be prepared for full changes on your lap (NONE of our flights had a changing table). If your LO sleeps well in the car hopefully they'll nap well for you on the flight! I'd love to hear how it goes for you, both the flight and how your LO handles the time change. We're considering a flight from the east to west coast in a few months and I'm concerned about how she'll handle the 3hr time difference.

We have taken about 4 flights so far, another one next week, and they have all been pretty easy. I nurse my daughter during take off and landing and let her sleep in my arms. I recommend getting a window seat so you have support to prop your arm up when they sleep.  Also bring lots of different toys to keep baby entertained. Right when she gets fussy I would pull a new toy out worked like a charm.  I wore her in a carrier through the airport and getting on and off the plane so I had my hands free. We just flew with our 5 month old. We checked our car seat and stroller so we didn't have to deal with it ( free to check both) and wore him in the baby carrier. Used my backpack diaper bag and made sure we had a few toys to keep him entertained. You can ask if there are any middle seats open for your flight and they may move you so you can use it. Our flight home the nice people at the gate moved us to a row that was open so we had a seat to lay our baby on to stretch out and gave us more room! Make it as simple and easy as possible to get through security and airport. If your baby cries - don't sweat it - it happens! Good luck

My LO has been on two trips so four flights total. I nursed him pretty much the whole time and he slept. Have another one coming up in a few weeks and now that's he's older (5mo) and more awake we'll see how it goes.

My baby is 5 months old and has been on 4 planes already. She's travelled to Mexico, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Paris (we live in Vancouver Canada).  I find that ppl are really nice to you because you have a baby. Like, there's a special line in security, you board first, flight attendants are really sweet and helpful (like saving a meal for you if your baby is up during the meal service.  Every time we fly with her we bring her stroller and carrier because some airports allow you to do a gate check for ur stroller but once you arrive to you destination city you may have to pick up the stroller at baggage claim (cough cough Paris, and Vancouver airport).  Milk no problem to bring tsa gets that it's for baby, also depending on baby's weight some airplanes have built in bassinets and they are life changing. Also during take off and landing feed baby, it's to prevent their ears from popping. But chances are baby will just sleep but bring teething toys my girl was teething like crazy on our flight to Paris I felt so bad but I had Teething rings and crunchy toys in the diaper bag for her so I was ok. Oh yeah, diaper bag hack.  I had a huge ziplock bag with wipes her changing mat, coconut oil and diapers. So it was easy to just grab that vs the whole diaper bag cuz the bathroom is so tiny.
