Starting solids ?

Question

My little boy is almost 6 months, so that means time to start solids, but I'm just wondering, since he's my first and I have no idea how to start introducing them, if anyone could give me some ideas on how you start introducing them ? 
I'm just not to sure on what he can have, and if he's meant to have milk after or not. 
Some tips or ideas would really be appreciated, or a rough plan if possible, I'm so stumped

Cows milk is saved for after 1 (but small amounts of cheese/yogurt are fine, but not good starter foods)
And a safe food to start with is sweet potato, which is super easy to cook up yourself (just like making regular mashed potatoes, but with formula/breastmilk instead!) or jarred is good too ;) 
Start by introducing the food for a whole week, and if there is no reaction its safe to move on and try a new food. Repeat this process for a few weeks and if baby isnt having any bad reactions you can just continue on trying new things :)
