Ok so I'm a cook at an i work 11 hour days in a hot kitchen. Yesterday I decided I would see if someone could cover Sunday so I could have a mini vacation with me 2 days off. So this morning my work calls Cuz one of the other girls didn't call off tell she was already suppose to be there. So they called me to see if I can come in so the girl covering me could work for that girl.. Is it wrong I said I'm out of town? Or should see of covered her own shift? They called and woke me up so now I can't go back to sleep

Absolutely not. It sounds like you need a few days off for yourself. This other girl has been unreliable and she gets rewarded with a day off? No, you're the one who was responsible and asked someone to cover for you. They'll survive, and if anyone looks bad, it's her, not you. Enjoy your time off and don't worry about them.

Not wrong. You deserve taking some time to make yourself happy. They'll survive. They shouldn't guilt you and you shouldn't guilt yourself. You're not living your life to enrich the owners if this restaurant and you are contractually allowed to take time off. It isn't your fault another employee didn't show up to work. I understand the guilt though. I literally ALWAYS said yes and would come in when I got called in to take another shift I only said no three times because I really could not make it to work. I even tried to show up to work with pink eye and they were like no Jocelyn go home...lol I HATED missing work.

Hell no! I use to hardly ever go in for shifts I wasn't schedule for. (Unless a co worker specifically asked a favor) lol that's your time off. It's there problem lol

I think the lying and saying you were out of town is wrong...but telling them no? No way! You don't have to go in. And even if you spent all day in bed, you would not have to feel guilty for not covering for the girl who didn't show. Just saying no is always a fine answer when work is asking for something above and beyond. It's hard to learn how to say it, but important. I think women especially have trouble saying no, and it's a tendency we need to fight.
