Does it sometimes hurt to put in a tampon when you usually don't feel it at all?

Usually, I use tampons during my period because sometimes pads cause chaffing down there. But this current period has me wondering if chaffing is worth switching to pads because of the pain I'm in whenever I have a pad in. Is it normal for tampons to feel bad for one period? Is there something I'm suddenly doing wrong?

I've used tampons only, since I was 15. I'm 33. Tampons have never hurt to put in, nor wear.

I have had occasional pain. I also have tilted uterus so that can possibly be the problem. I also learned (since I don't always wear tampons) that if you manage to bump your cervix, it will hurt just a bit. It took an act of Google to find that tidbit out. 
Everyone is also different and periods can be different.
