Engagement means marriage?

Question

So, I'm watching the bachelorette (yes, don't judge--- trying to support a WOC).
As incredibly intelligent as Rachel is, she just said that engagement doesn't necessarily mean marriage, and to her it means commitment to a relationship and making things work around that relationship.
I have never heard of ANYONE argue engagement doesn't mean marriage. So I'm curious as to what everyone's thoughts are here.

I don't think engagement means marriage, because it's preparing for marriage. Being engaged is not the same as being married. It's just the step before marriage and you're basically agreeing to marriage but there's still time to call it off.

My brother just proposed to his now fiancée but they aren't getting married. They're going to have a commitment ceremony, but she has very serious health problems and if they get married she can't stay on her fathers much better insurance plan which she really needs to survive.

To me an engagement is a promise to get married and commit in that way. I personally do not see the point in getting engaged when you have no intention of getting married. I'd never have an extended engagement or get engaged so that one day we'd eventually get married- I got engaged less than a week ago and I'll be married in a matter of months. We just need to get the date officially set and plan the thing, but we'll either get married a year from now in August or possibly December of next year if August doesn't work for the venue I want. But for me an engagement means you're planning your wedding for a date in the near future. I just don't see the point in waiting around once engaged or getting engaged with no intention to marry shorty.

I know a couple that's been engaged 7 years & hasn't even started to plan a wedding so I could see how it could be in some cases commitment and not marriage. But majority of the time engagement means marriage.

Why would you get engaged without the intent of definitely following through??.. I'm honestly not surprised someone on that show would say that.. that show is so fucking weird.. I've watched a few of the episodes this season cuz my bf's parents watch it lmao.. it's literally all for fame and fortune

I've never heard that before but I guess that's why some couples are engaged for years. 
This kind of reminds me of something I saw. Someone said "until I get engaged, I'm single".

Nope. Got engaged in November and I'm pretty certain I'm leaving. There's no marital strings attached so I'm free to leave with an almost clean break. We're having a child, but he's made it clear that if we're not together he doesn't want to be involved. Clearly our engagement hasn't lead to marriage either if that's what you're asking. Engagement isn't the same as marriage for a number of reasons. Mainly legal ones.

I was engaged for over 10 years so clearly it doesn't automatically mean marriage.
