6 kids. No monitor. I suppose that's bc I helicopter for the first 2-3 years. I don't know. Never needed it.

It's not a NECESSITY. My best friend has never used one. But I LOVE having it.

We have one that is basically like a little walkie talkie and it worka just fine

We have a video monitor. I love it. That being said I turned the sound off at our old house because I decided that if he needed me in the night I could hear him. Our new house is much harder to hear so it is on the lowest setting at night. During the day I don't use it. 
When I nannied I liked it because the house was big and the little girl never cried when she woke up. 
I think it all depends on your house.

Absolutely! My son has been sleeping in crib in his own room since day 1! I love my monitor
