How do you know what day you ovulated?

I see everyone saying they're however many days post ovulation, and I was just wondering how you know which day you ovulated? I understand about the fertile window, but still confused about the day you actually ovulate.

Using ovulation predictor kits work best for me. Kind of the same idea as a pregnancy test you pee on a stick until your test line is as dark as your control line and when you get a positive ovulation occurs in the next 12 to 24 hours. Also some women chart there basal body temp.

I tracked using advanced clearblue digital ovulation kits. it worked like a charm. I had never used them and just had gone off the app and symptoms i got (cramping, egg white discharge etc) and thought I knew when I ovulated. Turns out i ovulate WAY later than I thought or even than I feel those symptoms! in March (month we got pregnant) I thought I ovulated on 3/15-316 due to getting egg white discharge, cramping and I felt like my temp was elevated. But i kept trucking along with my ovulation tests and kept get negative every single day. I thought something was wrong because i kept getting no! We had sex on 3/20 by happenstance and I took another ovulation test the next morning and got a positive then took another one on 3/22 and it was negative! So I ovulated exactly on 3/21! we only had sex 3/20 and 3/22 and it worked like magic! :) I wouldn't be pregnant now if it wasn't for using those tests to track!
