Preventative Surgery
It's been two years since I had my prophylactic bilateral mastectomy. I did NOT have breast cancer, but I did do genetic testing, and tested positive for the BRCA2 genetic mutation. (Many know of this because of Angelina Jolie). This mutation leads to a large increase for developing breast and ovarian cancers. There are several options if you find out you carry the mutation ranging from doing nothing to having a mastectomy. I decided to have a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction at the age of 24. It was the greatest decision of my life, because I don't live in fear of developing breast cancer. I know there is a chance you will live your entire life cancer free, but for my family, this has not been the case. My great grandma, my grandma, my aunt, and my cousin all had breast cancer (and also tested positive for this mutation) around the age of 40. My grandma had breast cancer 4 times before she passed away. Watching that made my decision effortless. It never seemed like a controversial thing to me until I started talking to others about it...Many people have thought this was crazy of me to do. They think I am crazy for doing something so drastic.
What I want to know is would you do it? Do you think it's crazy to go through something so painful and expensive, even though you don't know if you will ever get the disease? What is your reasoning behind your answer?
