Toxic shock?

I haven't asked my doc about this yet ... has anyone experienced toxic shock from using a menstrual cup? Seeing mixed reviews online. I hate the internet for this reason. 😛

There is no way to get TSS from a diva cup. They don't dry you out like tampons and can't hold bacteria until they're not properly cleaned before hand. Many women who switch to the diva cup, switch BECAUSE they don't have any risks of TSS. Don't worry.

Ive read that you're not at risk because its silicone and it cant host the bacteria or something along those lines. Honestly the risk of tss with tampons is so low I probably wouldn't worry about it with either. Just make sure to keep your cup clean and wash your hands before and after inserting your cup each time.

I haven't experienced toxic shock, ( I use a diva cup). I did read online that toxic shock from tampons is incredibly rare. If menstrual cups were also causing toxic shock at the same rate as it occurs in tampon users, it would be very hard to detect because the cup is still relatively unpopular. My understanding of the risk was we just didn't know yet either way.

I read about a case where a woman did get tss from her cup (as far as i know the only case) but it said that she kept it in for her full period, didn't boil or wash it at all. So if you clean it properly you should be fine. Also stay away from extremely cheap cups from China, best case is that they are food grade silicone, but who knows what's in them. Stick with a reputable brand and keep it clean.

TSS comes from bacterial buildup in the cotton (or not) fibers of tampons. Because the cup is silicone it pretty much eliminates that issue.

Just to clarify, I haven't had any symptoms ... just reading the internet and getting all hot and bothered. I'm using the Lena cup. It's made out of silicone. So far the brand's FAQ lists nearly any question you have including toxic shock. Just read it and feeling a little less antsy.
