Yes, books! Nice, short board books are perfect. My son just turned one and I told most people to just get him books because I had no more room for toys and he was just starting to REALLY get into books. He's 13 months old now and many times when we're playing he'll stop playing to grab a book and have me read to him so it's nice to have a variety!

At that age I always go for bath toys for my nieces and nephews. They're relatively cheap, the kids love them, they're age appropriate, and it's probably not going to be something that someone else already bought.
