Who has experience with well water and septic system?

We are looking at buying a house, but it has well water and a septic system. My husband and I have no knowledge about this since we have always had city water. Any advice or experiences?

I can't help too much on the well, but is the septic an aerobic or conventional? I can help if it's an aerobic system. Whatever you do, before you buy the house GET EVERYTHING INSPECTED. Not just a regular home inspector, but by a licensed well and septic inspector.

I live in the middle of nowhere we have well water and a septic tank. I think well water tastes so much better than city water. And our septic tank we never had a problem with it. Just make sure u get it cleaned out ever 2-3 years.

one of our houses has a natural spring in the middle of about 50 acres. we pumped the water up to the house to have natural spring water all the time. we've had it tested multiple times. its cleaner than anything the city could ever offer, comes out of the tap ice cold and tastes so good!!! the only down side is that it makes it easier for the pipes to freeze in the winter if you lose power/heat....  we insulted our pipes and the pump house to prevent that and installed a back up gas heating system just in case.... not a big deal......
with a septic system just remember to never flush or rinse grease down your drains. it builds up and causes major issues.... basically all liquids and solid waste leaves your house via 1 pipe and goes into a large tank (like 1000 gallons) that is buried underground... on the other end of that tank there is an exit pipe set a little bit lower than the entrance pipe.... all solid waste (fecal matter, food particles, grease, etc) falls to the bottom of the tank, as the tank fills, liquids escape via the lower exit pipe  and go to a distribution box that is set roughly 10- 20ft away from the tank..... there are multiple pipes leading away from this distribution box out to lateral lines in your yard, they may be in the form of corrugated pipe or plastic chambers surrounded by gravel and dirt and are roughly 100ft in length.... the liquid is distributed to these pipes into the ground.... never dig, build or drive over the lateral lines as they can collapse and it can lead to a septic back up in your home.... the whole system works based on gravity so long as its not a mound system or pump system....you will also need to periodically have the tank pumped out as it eventually fills up with solids... there are many companies that provide that service for a few hundred dollars. call around and ask for prices and how often they would recommend having it done for your system... I have mine done every other year....  I install these in new homes for a living, if you have any other questions just ask.

I've lived in two homes with well water. It really just depends on the quality of water for where the house is. the first house I lived in, the water was terrible. It stained everything orange. It ruined my hair. I would dye my hair, and it would ruin the colors. my hair got really brittle and honestly fell out. But then I bought a house in a different area, and the water is great! still a well. But it's clear and we've had no problems with it. And I'm pleased to say that my hair has since grown back and gotten very healthy with water switch.
