Is being called "sweetheart" sexist?
I came across an article someone posted on my facebook. It was about celebrity Ashley Judd who posted a video talking about her experience at the airport. Apparently she arrived there, went to check in her bags, and the worker said "hey sweetheart" as a greeting. Then he went on to compliment her "pretty dress" and took her bags. Ashley told him the basically not compliment her or address her in that way. When he took her bags he accidentally touched her when he was helping her lift them in the conveyor belt. Then he said "alright have a good day sweetheart." Ashley then proceeded to post a rant to Facebook saying how sexist the man was and how she spoke to a manager about him. She said his behavior was "everyday sexism" and no women should even be treated that way.
Personally, I think she is overreacting. It sounds like the man was being polite, plus she was flying out of the south from what I understand, so literally everyone calls people "sweetheart" in the south.
Now I don't particularly like being called sweetheart because I already look 16 years old when I'm actually 28 and a grown adult. And to me, that word makes me feel belittled in a way. But I know that a person means well when they say it and they are just being polite, so I'm not going to complain about it. But I don't think it's sexist in any way.
Does anyone think differently or the same? What do you think about this situation?
