Metformin ? What is this and are there side effects?

Hi there all,
My doctor wants to put me on Metformin if I don't conceive this cycle. I was curious if: 
1) it worked for you and how long did it take you to conceive using it
 2) are there any awful side effects I should know about?

It took me seven months to conceive on Metformin. Only side effects I experienced was i felt slightly nauseous the first few weeks of taking it and it helped me to lose weight aswell.

I took it for 3 months and it worked for me
the only side effect I had was diarrhea, and I lost 20 lbs

This is my second month on it. I'm taking it to help regulate my cycle. A lot of people say it causes you to have an upset stomach but I haven't had that problem. I just take it before bed with a snack.
