how do i get my 2 year old to understand?

my son just turned 2, and I have to constantly tell him don't hit my tummy/kick tummy/hurt baby ect. any ideas or suggestions. I tap his hand and tell him firmly no, and put him in time out but he just laughs. I'm afraid he's going to seriously hurt me.

When my son hits, I give him a warning like "no hitting" or some such just so he hears what it is I didn't like; when he does it again, I tell him "That hurt me. Mommy won't play with you if you're hitting," and then I put him down and separate myself from him so he can't hit me any more. It doesn't matter how he reacts. All that matters is that when he hits, I stop him. Whether he laughs, cries, ignores me, the hitting has stopped and that's what matters.
