L-theanine or 5-htp

Has anyone taken these to help relax? Dh is sleep deprived from having to get up early each morning for work and it's really affecting his overall mood. Sunday nights is the worst cause he sleeps well all weekend then can't fall asleep Sunday night. He is especially grouchy Monday mornings. He then loads up on caffeine and wonders why he crashes. I read L-theanine helps with that. He won't stop the caffeine but is willing to try a natural supplement. Go figure. I just want him to be healthy and not so up tight due to lack of sleep. Any suggestions?
