Should I say something?

So my college is getting ready for the school year and as part of this it appears they're going through some of the residence halls and throwing out old mattresses. These are the ones that are "bedbug free", plastic/polyester/whatever - standard university beds. They're all clean because as per university rules they have to be thoroughly cleaned after each room is vacated.

But it kind of upsets me to think they might just be throwing them out, when there are several homeless shelters and organizations in the state who would probably be thrilled to receive a large donation of beds. I'm thinking maybe I should go into my school's student life office and see if I can speak to someone to suggest this as an alternative to just trashing them? Or do you think that would be overstepping?

As someone who was once homeless I think the school could do a great service by donating these old beds.
