Biology dissection while pregnant?

I'm 5 weeks pregnant and I'm supposed to be dissecting frogs in class tomorrow. I was wondering if I should back out of this or not? Could this be harmful to my pregnancy?

That level of exposure will not hurt you, and there's no reason to believe any of the formaldehyde will even make it to the fetus. Your body will absorb and metabolize practically all of the formaldehyde through your respiratory system, and studies have shown no effects on fetuses without very, very high level exposure of the mother (such as someone working in a not-so-well-ventilated factory that makes cleaning products, for example).

If you're really worried, you can try wearing a mask. I would avoid double gloves because they're actually more likely to cause clumsiness and therefore cuts during the dissectionm The first layer doesn't let anything on your skin, anyway, and humans do not absorb & metabolize formaldehyde dermally.

However, you're more likely than average to be nauseous as a result of the smell. So, you may want to try being close to the door and/or trash can.

*Note, I have training as a biology teacher, so I've looked into the related studies.

I'd be sure to wear double layer of gloves and a mask so not to smell the fumes of the formaldehyde.  Talk to your teacher.
