When is it safe to let baby sleep with a blanket?

DO NOT GIVE A BABY A BLANKET TO SLEEP WITH UNTIL THEY ARE 1, when they can use their hands to remove it or know how to wake themselves up if for some reason the blanket goes over their face.
A local girl in my town recently lost a 7 month old due to letting him sleep with a blanket. She was unaware he couldn't (which I get, there isn't an instruction manual on being a mom). My heart continues to ache for her.

I don't plan on using one until 2+, I know of stories where babies have been at old as three and gotten tangled up or suffocated by their blanket

They say not until 1 to use a blanket, but even then I'd go for a small baby one. They don't know how to keep it on at that point anyways and they don't have the strength or smarts to get out from under a big one if they get stuck underneath. Sleep sacks and fuzzy pj's are wonderful if you're concerned about warmth! Those little square cloth things with heads are okay after 9 months if you just want a snuggley thing for babe too.
