What do I do about distance

I just started dating my best friend in college. Both of us decided it was a good time to start, however we're both from out of state. He just went home to Washington and once he gets back I'm going home to Vermont. We both don't see our families often so our conversations over text are dulllll as a mother fuck. How do I spark some magic into our conversations? Do I ask him how he's doing? lol I haven't had a boyfriend for over a year so I'm kind of at a lost.
