What helps cramps?

I have HORRIBLE cramps, I tried birth control and I was on my period for 17 days, and I stopped it but i've been having bad cramps, I take midol but doesn't help.

I forgot to mention that if you have to be at work and a hot water bottle or heating pad are inconvenient, ThermaCare (the heat wrap people) have a line of wraps specifically made for cramps.

They fit nicely under clothes, aren't bulky and no one can tell you're wearing one. Be sure to follow the directions on the package.

I have extremely painful cramps too, i get them from my uterus all the way down to my knees and if I don't take anything it's so bad that I can't walk and I usually end up vomiting from the pain.

Right now I take two aleeve every 8-12 hours (basically what a prescription dose of naproxen would be). My doctor says it's important to start taking it BEFORE you get the cramps though. The way pain killers work is they block the pain receptors in your brain from receiving the signal from your nerves, so if the pain has already started when you take them its only going to block what comes after that not what it's already received.

When I know my period is coming I take 1 aleeve per day and then the day it starts I up it to 2. If it's still really really bad then you can alternate Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Aleeve (naproxen) halfway through the dosage time, that's what they would do if you went to the ER, but I wouldn't recommend doing this unless you are absolutely besides yourself bc taking too many pain killers is not good for your liver.

The painkillers won't make the pain completely go away, it just helps make it a little more bearable. At least for me, when I take them I still feel like crap but at least I can walk/sit up/go to work/etc. Heating pads are also great, hot baths, and make sure you stay hydrated! That's really important.

I've always had horrible cramps, recently I've found Vitex, a vitamin supplement, that works wonders for me. Once I found the right dosage, just one a day, my last two periods have been much easier.

On the first two or three days I still take a PMS vitamin put out by Nature's Way, which helps to slightly relieve some symptoms. It takes the edge off, but it's not a replacement for pain relievers.

I don't like taking high doses of ibuprofen our naproxen (naproxen is the common ingredient in Aleve, which supposedly works well on cramps) because of the side effects for your stomach. Recently I've been waking up with severe indigestion after taking naproxen. But because of my new vitamin supplement, I'm almost completely off mediation.

I second using a heating pad. I usually find the most relief of I put it on my back. If I have to go to work, sometimes I crack open some hot hands for mobile warm.

I hope you find what works for you. It took me 7 years to find my cocktail.

Go to the nearest drug store and purchase a hot water bottle. It's made of flexible plastic that can withstand high heat. Fill the bottle w/water warmed in the microwave or the stove. WRAP THE BOTTLE IN A TOWEL BEFORE PLACEMENT (the last thing you want is a skin burn close to your lady parts PLUS crams).

After that, curl up w/a good book or a Netflix marathon session and relax. :) You'll start to feel relief in MINUTES (faster than any pill).

If you don't want the mess of a hot water bottle, you could also get a heating pad.

Take an empty water bottle and fill it up with hot water or as hot as you Han handle. And put it where it hurts. I do that all the time and it helps. It helps my bf's little sister too and she has extremely painful cramps. So give it a try and I hope it helps. Hope you feel better. ☺
