Mixed girl...box braids

Advice needed! I know there's controversy with white girls and black hair styles. And as huffington post says "a slap in the face when white girls wear black hair styles". My dad is black and my moms white. My skin is very light and my hair is dirty blonde but it's very curly and probably one of the only things other than my nose that makes me look...not white. For back to school I wanted to try something different. My dad doesn't want me to dye or perm or do anything to really alter my hair and I agree. So to change it up I wanted to her box braids. Some people I've asked about it and they say I'm "too white" for braids. So I don't know if I should or not....opinions?
