When is an appropriate age to start painting your daughters nails?

I've been painting my little girls toes since she was about 18 months (because she see me and wants hers done). I've never done the fingers because she still puts her fingers in her mouth. They other day out shopping some lady came up to me and said I was a bad mom and my daughter is going to end up sick beacuse of the nail polish. What are your thoughts ladies?
