Question

When do you start pumping? Right after birth? What if I don't make enough milk right away does the baby not eat?

With my first the lactation nurses were having me pump in the hospital and told me when I went home to pump right after a feeding a couple times a day to increase my supply. My daughter was having trouble latching, a lot of blisters and bleeding nipples so I don't know if they were worried she wasn't getting much milk and wanted to make sure I didn't lose my supply. With my son he gave me blisters for the first few days but we had the right form down so they just thought he needed some training on how to get my nipple in the right spot. The lactation nurse said to only pump for relief of engorgement in the first 2 weeks. I would say if you need to increase your supply to pump, it will help your milk come in faster. Mine came in at day 3, it happens faster the second time around. But once you start pumping after feeding (even if you do it just a few times) it's probably something you will need to keep doing because you're going to increase your supply but baby won't be able to drink that much. You'll be pretty uncomfortable from engorgement if you stop.
