How likely are we to have twins?

Question

Twins both run in my family and my boyfriend's family. My aunts on my mother's side are (fraternal) twins. I believe my dad might have been a twin or triplet (he was adopted so I do not know). My boyfriend himself was a twin but his brother didn't live to birth. He also has 1 or 2 sets from his parents side as well. I am not very educated on what determines twins..

Identical twins are not passed through your genetics but fraternal twins are. However it needs to come from the mother's side. It is up to the woman to release two eggs which is what causes fraternal twins. So your BF being a twin or having twins on his side will not increase your chances.

My family has 3 sets of twins on my dads side and 2 sets of twins on my moms side. I found out a week ago I'm pregnant with twins! Not sure what your chances are.

If you want twins and also specifically want a boy and a girl, the surest way is IVF with genetic testing. Even this will not give you a 100% though.
As is you do have a slightly higher chance of spontaneous twinning, but "it really is 50/50" ;)
