breast feeding

I am a young first time mum and i keep seeing people mention they couldnt breast feed as it was too painful or baby didnt latch ect. My question is if babies dont latch or its too painful could you not pump and put in a bottle from newborn? As this is what i was planning to do if it didnt go as planned? but have no idea as people usually go to formula if they cant latch or its painful?
