Breastfeeding a preemie?

So my son was born at 35 weeks. He was perfectly fine, other than needing to gain a little weight to keep his temperature up. He sucked on a bottle just fine. They never even asked me if I wanted to try to let him latch! Or if I wanted to breastfeed! They just automatically gave me a pump. It was really frustrating and upsetting. This time around, I know my baby will be born no later than 37 weeks. My question is, did you have issues with a preemie breastfeeding? I don't understand why I wasn't given the choice.
