Slow weight gain

Shanna • Huge family.
My baby came home last Friday (1 week and 3 days ago) at 5Ibs. 2 oz. at his dr. Appoinent 4 days later, was only 5 Ibs. 4 oz. Then I took him by to have him weighed at the office for my curiosity and they left his clothes on, but he was 5 Ibs. 10 oz a couple days later. We have another dr. Appoinent tomorrow, and I'm extremely nervous. I will be heartbroken if he hasn't gained but an ounce or two. The dr. Told me last week that she would like to see him gain 4 or 5 ounces before his next visit. What is normal weight gain? Because I feel like this is super slow. At this rate... He will be normal newborn size by the time he's a month or two old.

Breastfed babies gain weight mre slowly in the first couple weeks. Then they gain faster, and then slower again. As long as your baby is not losing weight, you're doing just fine. Just nurse as frequently as you can

The doctors don't want the baby to lose more than 10% of birth weight and want the baby to be back up to birth weight by 2 weeks.

My breastfed baby has had a little bit of slow weight gain too, but he's always had plenty of wet and dirty diapers and eats until he's content so I don't worry about it much. He's also met all developmental milestones. He was 6lb7oz at birth, went down to 6.1. I think he was 7lb14oz at one month, 10lb at two months, 11lb5oz at three months, and at his four month Monday he was 13lb3oz. My husband and I are also small people so I wasn't expecting a huge baby lol. I'm 5'2" and DH is 5'7". I forgot where I found it but there's actually other percentile weight gain charts for bf babies instead of the ones used for formula fed babies.

That's nice to know. I feel sure my dr. Just grabs the formula one. I thought they were averaged together

If he's not losing, that's what counts! My girl lost a LOT and we had to supplement. If doc isn't worried, I wouldn't be. Also, wet and dirty diapers are an indication

Is your baby breast fed? The only reason I ask is me and my friend had babies 9 days apart. They were 8lb 11oz at birth and 7lb 10oz. My baby lost 5 % of his birth weight and she lost nearly 10 %. They are now 9 and 8 weeks old. My formula fed baby is now nearly 13lb wheras her breastfed baby is now nearly 9lb. There is a lot more fat In formula milk so I would say that if your baby is gaining weight it all sounds good but if you are breastfeeding that could explain why it's a bit slower in your opinion. Hope that helps.

Yes, my baby is breastfed

And I know he's eating if diapers are the indication, because he has LOTS of wet and poop diapers.

I also think this is an important indicator. He may just surprise you with a spurt pretty soon!!

Dr. Said today that normal weight gain for breastfed babies for the first month is 1/2 ounce per day. So, approximately 2-3 ounces per week. FYI.
