Should I start birth control pills for the first time?

Hi, I'm 18 yrs and I was wondering if I should go on BC pills. I am currently in a relationship and sexually active. I heard that there are many side effects of the pill so I'm not too sure if I should take them. Btw if I do decide to use them, I will not be telling my parents so if anything does happen I wont be able to see a doctor and that's why I'm so skeptical about it. What should I do? Also, can you guys tell me your experiences with the pill?
