Am I wrong??

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip for October. Money has been a bit tight for both of us and our 1year anniversary is before the trip and so is my birthday. (Anniversary September 18th and birthday September 30th.)My boyfriend has been pulling a lot of doubles at work to the point I rarely see him lately so I said to not exchange anniversary gifts and for him to not get me a birthday present that way there's more money for the trip. Am I wrong to think this way?? He of course told me no because it's our 1year anniversary. I say it's ok because we have known each other for 9 years and have dated off and on(we seem to always come back to each other....different story for a different time) but this time being the longest. I just feel the cash would be used better for vacation. If it was something made or inexpensive then that's a different story.
