sleep regression or teething!!!??? help!

Question

My son is 8 months old. He is my first which is why I'm asking this question.

He has not been sleeping through the night for the last few days and cries when I put him down for a nap even when I know he is extremely tired!!!

He has been climbing and trying to walk so I figure maybe he's exhausting more energy causing him to be more tired but he won't sleep.

My pediatrician is not clear whether he is teething or not and is saying he is going through a growth spurt, which very well may be happening. Just curious on what's going on. He has also been so much more clingy. He crawls/walks to me for me to hold him constantly. 
He has also not done this before. He's always gone down with no issues and is very calm and content.

It could be anything .... with my daughter I didn't even realize she was teething at 11 months, and was so frustrated why she was waking all night and sleeping so horribly and two teeth finally popped through! And I was like OH..lol..  It only took idr 2-4 bad nights? So my advice is wait and see if a week goes by and no teeth are emerging... he may be in a little sleep regression...and may need a little sleep training! .....it sounds like maybe some separation anxiety too! My daughter started that around that age and I couldn't leave her side... you'll figure it out! They do funky things he might be over it next week!

He wants snuggles and he knows you will give them to him, but for my son around that age he didn't get more snuggles at night time because he could put himself to sleep even though he acted like he didn't, put him in bed, let him cry himself to sleep.
