Boyfriend leaving

I am now a high school senior and my boyfriend is a college freshman at a university 20 minutes away from me. He used to live 40 mins away. We've been dating for almost a year. I love him with all my heart and I want to be with him for as long as I can. And he feels the same way. Is it possible to make the relationship last? I'll do anything but is it useless to even try? Everyone always says it's stupid and that I'd be holding him back and that it'll end by thanksgiving. And I love him to death but the last thing I want to do his hinder him from having the best college experience. He deserves to have an amazing time even if that means I can't be apart of it. Opinions?
