How to dress my newborn in the winter?

I live in Upstate NY, so it gets cold here during the winter.. 
I have a car seat cover that's fleece lined to help him stay warm. And obviously he'll have blankets as well. But my question is, how should I dress him when we go out? Is like a snowsuit type thing necessary, or should I just have him in a fleece onesie with a coat? I don't want him to freeze, but I don't want him to overheat either. This is my first kid, so I have no idea lol

Snow suits and coats can't be worn in car seats. Stick with a fleece jacket and onesie. A blanket and the car seat cover will take care of the rest.

The rule of thumb is to add an extra layer of clothes. Layering is always best because you can always take a layer off. But I would suggest the snowsuit. I live in Northern Kentucky (just south of Cincinnati) and I'm going to put my baby in the snowsuit with fleece clothing and a simple long sleeve onesie (as long as it's actually cold that is) this way I can remove layers if it's too hot.

I live in Wisconsin and we have -25 weather. For my son, I dressed him in a long john type shirt, a fleece jacket with no hood, that was tight, and fleece lined jeans. I secured him in his carrier, put on his hat and gloves, then used a sherpa thick blanket and then a thick carrier cover. The cover had a zipper and a flap you could open for the face. I always had an extra fleece blanket (I used full size, folded) on days really cold and windy. Always have extra blankets in your car.

I say a snowsuit and always always a hat. The car seat is awesome keeping the cold wind out. But you need to make sure that the heat isn't high in car for baby to sweat being bundled.

Fleece onesie and hat are fine with a blanket/car seat cover. If they are in a car seat, a coat makes the car seat unsafe.
