I went to my regular 37 week doctor appointment (at 37+2)
I went to my regular 37 week doctor appointment (at 37+2). At this appointment my blood pressure was slightly elevated and I had some protein in my urine. My doctor put me on bed rest, told me to push fluids, eat protein with every meal and to come back in two days. I followed the doctor's orders and returned two days later. At the second appointment my blood pressure had went up since the last appointment, my reflexes were not as they should be and I had even more protein in my urine. My doctor and two other doctors agreed that despite me being 37+4, that the best move was to induce me because I had developed preeclampsia. My husband and I ended up waiting for several hours at the doctors office because my doctor got called away to deliver two babies. When she returned, she induced me by using a balloon that would manually dilate me (I was about 90% effaced, but only 1cm dilated at this time). She did the procedure and my husband and I drove to the hospital minutes away and checked me into labor and delivery. They observed me over night, which was pretty uneventful and I felt only mild contractions. The next morning a doctor checked the balloon and it pretty much flew out, which hurt quite a bit. The doctor wasn't expecting the ballon to come right out because normally they only dilate to 3 or 4cm, but the balloon dilated me all the way to 5 cm and I hadn't felt any contractions. At that point, she broke my water, and I began to feel the contractions 10-15 minutes later. At this time I was started on magnesium (to prevent a seizure during labor). When I was 6cm I asked for an epidural. I had always been open to natural or an epidural, but due to the preeclampsia I was advised to do the epidural. I'm glad I did because I slept until I was 10 cm and it was time to push. I pushed for about an hour with some strong coaching and encouragement from my husband, who held my leg throughout my labor. After about 7 hours of active labor, our baby girl was born. She was 7 lbs, 6 oz. and 19 3/4 in. We named her Kaelyn Bree.
