Do you agree with this?

For anyone who isn't aware, the Angel Tree is a charity type thing in my area (and I'm sure others) where kids of very low income families have their first name, age, clothes sizes, something they need, and something they want on a little card, which is put on a big tree in a public place like a church or mall. People go up, pick a card and buy gifts for that child who wouldn't have any otherwise.
So do you agree with this, that if you have something like a $1,000 phone that you should be able to provide Christmas gifts for your child and other things they need?
While I do think that the value of the phone is somewhat irrelevant because there are payment plans, few people pay outright for a phone anymore, plus they could have been gifted it or had it for a little while, if you need a smartphone I would think you could get an older Galaxy or something (we have one sitting around acting as our hotspot) for much cheaper. I would completely shut off my phone, tv, internet, etc if I had to in order to provide for my daughter, but I understand some need their phones and internet for work.
