If you read some of the letters written by the framers around this time, there was a great debate on whether a standing army would threaten the liberties of the civilian populace (government take-over). The ability for civilians to form a well-regulated militia would be required in order to preserve those freedoms if this event were to occur. It doesn't mean that those civilians must already be participating in a militia, only that for civilians to even be able to form a militia that the individual right to bear arms must be preserved.

I thought it was to prevent foreign entities from taking quarter in private residences like the British did?

I think the forefathers lacked the foresight to see that citizens owning guns would be the bane of society's existence, because of the countless occurrences of accidental deaths, murders, shootings, etc. even creating citizen militias could be seen as threatening to the public and safety of others when having zealous individuals that use language that would incite taking arms, as a fear-mongering tool.  
I strongly, feel that the second amendment was not thought out nor planned for what we see in our communities and society as a whole.
