Is this normal? First prenatal appt today...

Hello all! I had my first prenatal appointment today with my OBGYN. I was assuming I’d get a transvaginal ultrasound because I’m not sure how far along I am. But, instead they took a urine sample and a blood test. My doctor said based on the results from the urine test I am pregnant for sure and that after they get the results from the blood test (Wednesday) she’ll determine how far along I am, and based on that we’ll schedule my next appointment where we do an ultrasound. Is this normal? Or should she have done a transvaginal ultrasound today anyways?

This sounds very normal. Even with insurance, ultrasounds can be crazy expensive. Your doctor might just be trying to save you an unnecessary bill. Typically doctors want to wait until at least 8 weeks to do an ultrasound as this is when you can get a good full yolk sack and heartbeat. Best of luck :)

I got an ultrasound with my first appointment, but I didn't get another one until my 20 week check up. They did use a doppler every appointment up until my 20 week ultrasound though.

I went to my GP to confirm my pregnancy with a blood test the day before my expected period. We made the appointment together to see the OBGYN around 8 weeks and I had a TVU.

It's normal in my experience. That first TVU requires a lot of resources so my doc won't schedule one until pregnancy is confirmed.
