Depo shot

My gyno just assigned me the depo shot. I am very nervous because people are telling me that you gain weight. I am actually trying to lose weight right now. Is it the shot that makes you gain weight or the symptoms of the shot making you want to eat more? Sorry if I sound dumb! This is my first type of birth control!
