This is exactly why I go to work with step dad. He's a mechanic and he teaches me things. I like to let people think they can pull one over on me and then surprise them. I won't be made a fool of on something I could easily obtain knowledge on.

It's happened to me before. That's not to say that ALL mechanics will try to take advantage of a woman's lack of knowledge, though.

Im 16, i have my own car and it broke down about a week ago. Took it to the mechanic and he was starting to give me all this bullshit info saying that this and this needed to be fixed && he was trying to make me pay close to $350. Told the dude that i didnt think so and told him that he might as well not try to tell me some fake bs because i know cars too. My stepdad is a mechanic, my boyfriend is a mechanic and im taking auto-mechanics, yea, good luck trying to fool me 😉

Yes i took my car for an oil change and the mechanics (salesmen) told me my front brake pads need to be replaced, that they were completely worn out. I said no thank you and later on went with my boyfriend to buy some brake pads and my boyfriend replaced them for me. He showed them to me and told me they still had plenty of time (figures). Fast forward 6 months later I go back again to the mechanic for a simple oil change and once again tells me my front brake pads needed to be replaced. I said really because my Bf just replaced them six months ago after you guys told me the same thing. He didn't even know what to say lol

They will try with women. That's a fact. But, my brother is a mechanic and does all my vehicle work for me. I can do basic stuff like changing my oil and checking fluids, though.

Yes. A guy tried to give me some false information about what was wrong with my car I then told him "Really that's odd I didn't notice that when I checked my car before coming here." Turns out he broke something else so he could charge me extra and get more money. Another guy put a nail in my tire when I went to get my car smogged. Oh and he ran two tests cause "The first test failed which has never happened to me before so I ran another test and that one failed too." Then he said "but don't worry I'll only charging you for one of the failed tests." UH YEAH, YOU ARE. I didn't ask you to run it twice. Then I left and guess what? A nail was perfectly jammed into my tire. Definitely wasn't an accident I didn't run it over I know for a fact. I then missed work the next day (yay lost more money) because all the tire shops were closed by then. I only let my SO's friend who's a mechanic touch my car now. He tells me what's wrong, what I need to order, and he installs it for less than half the price and a free meal.
