Has anyone here had someone with deep scars from self harm be employed with law enforcement or army?

I'm 16, turning 17 next year. I do have previous self harm scars that are quite deep on my upper thigh and wrist (only a singular but extremely deep cut/scar on my wrist) My dream is to join the army once i finish school (next year) and after a fee years leave and join the police force as they generally refuse to employ young people so I'm told and i thought eith previous experience in the army it would increase my chances of being hired. I'm just unsure if my old mental health issues will prevent that. So, have you or a friend heard of someone getting accepted even after having scarring?

My husband is in the military and he’s been in for 10 years. He is a supervisor recruiter. They don’t allow anyone that have previously caused self inflicted wounds, but it’s based on what you tell them. If you have a story you made up and it sounds like it could have legitimately happened and caused the wounds they can’t get medical records because of the HIPPA act so it’s all based on what you tell them. The military is careful with enlisting people that may not be mentally stable because depending on the job you get to pick it could potentially be a situation and they don’t want you to put yourself or others at risk.

It depends on the scars. I know people with scars from self harm who are in the military but they had to get wavers from doctors saying they were mentally stable enough to join. Where as me I was automatically disqualify because of mine and they aren’t deep, just a name... so it depends on the recruiter and the people at meps

My husband is in the army and they won't allow people with scars that are visible enough to be seen in because to them you have a suicidal tendency which is something in the long run they will have to deal with atleast that's how they see it

I dont think the military allows self harm scars. But if your a female you have a pretty decent shot getting a job as a cop shortly after academy so if your just doing army to get an extra boost you most likely would have a good shot as is since they want more females.

You can always apply and see. The best thing you can do is just be completely honest. The only reason they would deny you is if they had determined that you had any remaining psychological issues that would effect your work performance. My husband is currently in the backgrounds for law enforcement and it is pretty extensive. They will do a full physical including xrays and other detailed tests, as well as psychological evaluations and a polygraph test. They will more than likely ask you if YOU think it effects your ability to perform the job. Be honest, do your best, and you will probably be fine. It's worth a shot to try!

And Yes, being a veteran would increase your chances because they have something called veterans preference. It would put you ahead of others without it.
