Breaking a lease

Has anyone ever broken a lease before? What were the ramifications? My doctor has told me he's recommending I no longer work to avoid going on bed rest. It's been an extremely rough pregnancy... Without my income, my husband and I can't afford our rent at our apartment complex. You can terminate your lease for medical reasons, however, my OB's office won't write a note for proof because they "don't do that sort of thing." Like what? So now we have to terminate our lease without the medical paperwork. What are some outcomes to expect? Our lease doesn't specify, and I don't know how understanding the manager will be.
