Get rid of pacifier!?

Hello all! I need advice on how to get rid of pacifier for my 5 month old son. It used to be great but now I’ve noticed for about a week he’s getting up almost hourly crying fo pacy which means me or Dad wake up and put it in for him. Makes us all tied in the long run. How have you taken it away from your 5 month old? Cold turkey? Gradually? Thanks for input!

I think you should wait a little longer or get the wubba which doesn't fall out as easy. He's only 5 months. They can't self soothe. He needs something to comfort him.

We took away the paci away during the day. We just wouldn't give it if he wasn't sleeping. We tried the multiple paci's in the bed at night, but nope.. we were still up! Then, we just took it away for good. Babies at 5 months old don't have object permanence yet, it'll be easier to stop the paci attachment before 12 months. It took a few days then he didn't even miss it...

I remember this struggle! If baby is using it during the day start with limiting and then taking it away completely during the day. For nights you may need to start kind of sleep training. What I did was let my son initially fall asleep with the pacifier (he was six months) but if he woke up in the middle of the night he was on his own. We'd sprinkle pacifiers in the crib in the hopes that he'd reach one and put it in but that never happened at that age. Either way you're going to be losing some sleep, either with reinserting all night or with hearing baby cry until they fall back asleep. Both will eventually stop once baby can grab the pacifier them self or once they figure out self soothing. Personally I'd wait until 6 mos to take away the paci. A lot of babies still need the sucking
