I think it varies a lot. 
One has to take into consideration a lot of things. 
I don't go thru my fiances phone and vice versa, we've been together for 11 years and can't say he's given me a reason to mistrust him and vice versa

The bigger question is why do you want to go through their phone anyway? I’ve been with my husband for almost 12yrs and have NEVER once gone through his phone. Why would I need to? If I need his phone to call to find mine, he gives it to me. But do I need to see convos between his family members or friends? Or what he’s searching the Internet for? No. I’m not that paranoid.

Me and my boyfriend don't go through each others phones because we have private conversations with friends and family there. If my friends going to tell me something personal she is not going to want my boyfriend to see that. We trust each other enough to not need to look through messages.

I have never went through my SOs phone either but he doesn't act like a fool or make me suspicious so I don't feel the need to.

its called having trust and respect. you dont do it because theyre not your child. theyre your partner. you dont do it bc if you have a problem, you confront them directly. its not about, if you look for it, you get what youre looking for . that's so immature
